Bifocal and polarized reading glasses
Once people reach a certain age it seems almost inevitable that their eyes will weaken. You can always tell by some of the common signs, such as holding your newspaper at arm’s length, that it is time to do something about it. Most people begin to experience this type of eye weakening, known as presbyopia, in their forties and fifties. Over time our eyes just lose their ability to focus in on items that are close.
There are a couple of different things you can do when faced with the natural sign of age. Some people choose to go to an eye doctor for a complete eye exam and to purchase a pair of prescription reading glasses. Others run out to the nearest drug or discount store and purchase a pair of nonprescription glasses.
Getting your eyes checked by a professional is a good idea if this is something you have not done in a while. They will be able to check the overall health of your eyes and make sure that there are no other problems that are creating your vision problems. Then you will need to decide whether you really need the expensive prescription glasses or if the drugstore reading glasses will suit you just fine. If your eyes have other problems, such as distance viewing, astigmatism, or different prescriptions for each eye, then it is a good idea to go with prescription glasses.
On the other hand, if all you need is some magnification of things up close the drugstore reading glasses may be just what you need. Since these glasses are so affordable you can even buy multiple pairs. This will allow you to put a pair everywhere you are likely to need them or to purchase different styles and colors to coordinate with different outfits.
Finding the Right Ones
When purchasing over-the-counter glasses it is easy to find the ones that will work for you. On the display case there will usually be a chart which has a short sentence in different type sizes. All you need to do is stand a foot away from the chart and find the first sentence that it is difficult for you to read. The correct magnification level to correct your eyesight will be listed next to each sentence.
There are two main styles of over-the-counter reading glasses, half glasses and full glasses. Half glasses are designed to make it easy for you to look up from your reading and see clearly at a distance. Full glasses will cover more of the eye and allow you to see more of the page while reading.
When selecting a pair of glasses for reading it is important to remember that they are fairly inexpensive. Feel free to play around with different types and styles until you find the ones that suit you best.
