Cylindrical lenses are types of magnifying glasses, which are specifically designed for reading wide columns of print. Cylindrical lens magnifies only in one direction. For instance, it will only magnify the letters in height and not in width. The similar effect happens when a cylindrical lens of the eye put the optical system out of focus. It will only introduce blur in one direction.

This is called uncorrected astigmatism. When reading, the letters are blurred directionally, as if the print has been smeared. A cylindrical lens of the correct strength can adjust this kind of blur. When an optometrist or ophthalmologist measures your eye, through a procedure known as refraction they can find the best possible spherical correction. To correct astigmatism, the next step is to adjust the vision by adding the right amount of cylindrical correction.
