Rather you call them glasses, spectacles, or eyeglasses they are all the same thing, frames which hold lenses that are worn in front of the eyes.

Rather you call them glasses, spectacles, or eyeglasses they are all the same thing, frames which hold lenses that are worn in front of the eyes. Sometimes they are purely for decorative reasons however, generally they are to correct ones vision or for eye protection, and in some instances for entertainment for viewing 3-D images or virtual reality.

We wear glasses for many reasons, to correct our vision, protect our eyes from foreign objects or from the sun. Corrective lenses have been shaped to correct any vision abnormalities. Whereas safety glasses may or may not correct the individual's vision, they will protect the wearer's eyes from debris. Sunglasses just like safety glasses protect the wearer's eyes but from the sun and not from debris. Moreover, like safety glasses sunglasses may or may not correct the wearer's eyesight.

We have an oxford professor to thank for giving us the modern glasses we use today with pads. In the late 1800's at Oxford University, a professor placed nose pads on his lorgnettes. The first oxford glasses were called modified lorgnettes, then pince-nez and oxfords.

Depending where in the world you live, will determine what you call your eyeglasses. In North American English, they are referred to as glasses, eyeglasses. In Great Britain, they are referred to as spectacles, or specs.

Glasses are called glasses because that was what they were originally made from, but today many glasses are made from plastic. Plastics are lightweight and, provide a greater amount of protection than glass. Coatings can be applied to plastics, making them scratch-resistant and easier to clean with hydrophobic coatings.
