Eyeglasses can be extremely simple or very complex.

Eyeglasses can be extremely simple or very complex. Simple magnifying lenses for reading are often purchased OTC, over the counter, or off the shelf from drugstores, grocery stores, and discount stores. These simple lenses are used to compensate for mild hypermetropia or presbyopia. However, most individuals who wear glasses need a particular prescription, which is based upon degree of myopia or hypermetropia they suffer and if they also have astigmatism. Prescription lenses are specifically ground for each eye.

Unfortunately we all age, no one stays young forever. As we age, our ability to see clearly lessened. For many the need of multiple-focus lenses, bifocal or even trifocal is required to correct our vision. Traditional lined multifocal lenses have two or three distinct viewing areas with each area requiring a conscious effort on the wearer's part to refocus. Traditional bifocals originally were two separate lenses, trifocals being three separate lines. Today we have lineless or progressive multifocal lenses, which give a smooth transition between the separate lenses. This smooth transition is usually unnoticeable by the wearer.

Computer glasses have a magnification to enhance the images on the monitor. Many computer glasses are also coated with Melanin tint that reduces the blue and violet light from computers and indoor fluorescent lighting, which can harm your eyes.
